Broken Calabash

Trust was shattered when a mother closed her eyes to the thieves in her home
A father was blinded by gifts while his pride was stolen

The calabash is broken
Such a beautiful edifice
Now hidden in the dust
Some say it fell from the heavens
Designs unmatched by the most skillful of hands
Patterns never seen by the human eye
Stolen away in the twisted heat of desire
Admired, abused, and abandoned
Little mother Africa
Calabash of pride

Slow death is her sentence
Cut down before her prime
Before her beauty is full her innocence is polluted
Compassion drained Fathers become husbands
Lust that must feast on poverty and misplaced opportunity; shame
Must bush meat be eaten alive because it is sweet?
Even the King must wait for water to boil if he desires a hot bath
No matter the hurry the rain drop must pass through the clouds and sky to reach the rooftop
The moon must be full for a moon light dance
Even a thief must wait for the plantain to be strong before he visits its mother
No one gives his guests premature kola nuts; abomination
Why then can't Musa wait

  1. I have taken a good time to go through this piece of creativity, good job friend. As regard this issue, please don't sweat it much. The major work lies with the individual, not the passing into law. Parent who want the best for their daughters won't introduce them to what's not right. But the truth is that must child are already wilder than you think at tender age, exposed to all kinds of atrocities by so many things that civilization so bless us with.

Child Not Bride is not the issue, parents are.
Let's us all stand and fight for what is right, and stop making noice about the stupidity and foolery of our so called governmental leaders.

  2. You have spoken well my brother. This is not a matter of the dog and the cat. It is based on individual. I do wish however that it is possible to make it illegal for a girl to have sexual relationship or even be married before 18 (or 20).

The battle begins with the parents thus the begining of the poem... "Trust was shattered when a mother closed her eyes to the thieves in her home
A father was blinded by gifts while his pride was stolen..."
It is the place of the parents to protect these kids however how many thet are, or better still they can have as little as the can afford.
The issue of the girl childbeing looked down on is also another matter. Even in this day and sge the education of the girl child is still debatable? That is heart breaking. Give every child the same chance, none is useless.
Thank you for the comment and for reading. God bless you.

  3. This is a deep piece. Well written and thought provoking. I especially love the opening lines which indict both the mothers/fathers for failing to do right by their children. Our children deserve to keep their innocence for as long as possible, and not have it snatched away by some sick adults! Nice one.

  4. Thanks so much for the comment Madam. Wow. I feel so honored.

On the issue of the Broken Calabash it is true that the fault first of all is from the parents. Only the parents can break that code of protection... What detrayal. It is just another form of slave trade if you ask me.
